81-year-old Mrs Rita Burrows from Katikati in New Zealand contacted the Badminton Museum to see if the Museum would give a safe home to two silver miniature badminton trophies that Sir George Thomas had won in the early 1900s. One was a Scottish Open Men’s Singles trophy that he had won in 1914, and the other was the All-England Men’s Singles trophy that he had won in 1922. The two miniature trophies are now on display at the Badminton Museum, Milton Keynes.

Rita explained how these two trophies had come into her possession; she said that her father, John Farmer, back in 1933 when he was about 12 years old, met Sir George in London and struck up a long friendship with him. Rita said they would meet on Sundays, but the onset of the war made it difficult to meet. Sir George said to my father it would be a good idea if they kept in touch, every year her father would meet up with Sir George on the nearest Sunday to 11 September, her father’s birthday and Sir George would give her father a pound note, this continued right up to 1970. During that time, Sir George gave her father a miniature trophy when he married in 1941 and another in 1943 when Rita was born. Rita said that her father did not play badminton, chess, or tennis; he was interested in engineering and mechanics.
The Scottish Open men’s singles miniature trophy was won in 1914. The Scottish Open tournament started in 1907, and Sir George had won the singles title every year up to 1914 except 1908.
In addition to winning the miniature All-England Cup in 1922, Sir George Thomas also won the perpetual trophy outright after winning the event for three consecutive years. Sir George also won the men’s singles for the fourth time in 1923.
Sir George Thomas
Sir George Thomas served as an army officer in the First World War and contracted lung problems when serving in Mespot and was told that he would never play sport again. So, when the All-England started again after the war in 1920, Sir George, at the age of 38, won his first All-England men’s singles title. It was the first of four consecutive men’s singles titles. In 1921, he won the triple All-England, winning singles, men’s doubles and mixed, and went on to play some of his best badminton in his career; in an interview he gave to the Evening News in 1935, he said that winning the men’s singles in 1920 was his most enjoyable sporting achievement.

 

In 1928, at the age of 46, Sir George won his last All-England title, a men’s doubles with Frank Hodge. This made a total of 21 titles; he still holds the record of winning the most All-England titles.

India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy broke a decade-old Guinness world record for the fastest shot ever in badminton, 351 miles per hour (565 km per hour), using a Yonex Nanoflare 1000 Z racket with BG80 strings.

Pearly Tan from Malaysia also set a new record for the fastest female badminton hit with a remarkable speed of 272 miles per hour (438 km per hour). Pearly Tan became the first female Guinness World Records title holder in this category.

The records were set on 14 April 2023 at the Yonex Tokyo factory and verified by official judges from the Guinness World Records. Measurement method: the moment of impact in the actual smash was calculated using a high-speed camera. The instant velocity of the shuttlecock after the impact was then calculated from photographic recording. Calculation method: the movement distance and the elapsed time of the shuttlecock were calculated between two coordinates.
Rankireddy’s record speed of 351 miles per hour (565 km per hour) greatly exceeded the previous world record of 306 miles per hour (493 km per hour) which was achieved by Malaysian badminton player Tan Boon Heong in May 2013. Tan Boon Heong was a former Asian Games doubles champion.
These new records show that badminton is significantly faster than other racket sports. The fastest tennis serve is 163 miles per hour (263 km per hour) and faster than Formula One, at 246 miles per hour (397 km per hour).

The First All-England Mixed Doubles Trophy from 1899

The All-England Mixed Doubles Championship Challenge Cup has recently been acquired by the Badminton Museum. The cup was first presented at the very first All-England Badminton Championships in 1899, the first winners were English pair D. M. Oakes and Miss Daisey St John. The trophy was presented to the winners, who also received 2 guineas (£2.10p), with the runners-up receiving 1 guinea.
Originally the cup would have had a wooden plinth base with a silver band where the winner’s names would have been engraved. The cup is silver and hallmarked in London in 1897 by Edward Barnard and Sons Ltd. The cup is now on display at the Badminton Museum in Milton Keynes.
In 1921, the first perpetual All-England mixed doubles cup was won outright by Sir George Thomas and Hazel Hogarth after they won it at three consecutive Championships – in 1914, 1920 and 1921 (there were no championships between 1915 and 1919 due to the First World War). Sir George and Hazel also won the mixed doubles title again in 1922.
Before 1979 if an All-England Champion won a trophy for three consecutive Championships or four Championships in total, they were awarded the trophy outright.
Sir George Thomas won a total of 21 All-England titles and Hazel Hogarth won a total of 11 titles.
Like many good standard badminton players of that time, they were also good standard tennis players. Hazel Hogarth and Sir George Thomas played tennis together at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships from 1913 to 1926.

At the 1921 All-England Championships, Sir George Thomas and Hazel Hogarth were also presented with a pair of miniature silver trophies when they won the mixed doubles title.
The Badminton Museum also has the third perpetual All-England mixed doubles trophy on display. This trophy was won outright in 1935 when Donald Hume and Betty Uber won the title for the third consecutive year. They also won the mixed doubles title for the fourth time in 1936.

The Badminton Museum has acquired three different extremely rare barrelled shuttlecocks circa 1907 for the National Collection. They all arrived in the same Slazenger tube, prior to this the Museum only had one barrelled shuttle in its collection.
They are called barrel because they closely resemble the shape of a barrel, the feathers are inserted into the cork with the flat side of the quill to the outside, the natural inward sweep of the feathers produces the curved barrel shape. The shuttles have stitching halfway up the quills and another one around the quills at the top of the cork base.
From the start of the All-England Badminton Championships in 1899 to 1909 they used Jaques ‘Association First Choice’ barrel shuttlecocks. These were manufactured in France and in the early days with no specifications laid down, they suffered from considerable variation in length of flight, size, weight and uniform strength.

On a visit to the Badminton Museum at Milton Keynes, the families of Betty Uber and Donald Hume would reunite the All-England Mixed Doubles trophies after 87 years of being a part.

In 1935 Betty Uber and Donald Hume (England) won the All-England mixed doubles for the 3rd consecutive year and were awarded the trophies outright. Prior to 1979 if an All-England Champion won a trophy for three consecutive years or four Championships in total, they were awarded the trophy outright. Betty Uber and Donald Hume won the mixed doubles for the 4th time in 1936.

Also, on the visit to the Badminton Museum, the Hume family presented a men’s doubles All-England trophy to the Museum. Donald Hume with Raymond ‘Bill’ White (England) won this trophy outright after winning three consecutive years in 1934, Donald and Bill also won the men’s doubles for the 4th time at the 1935 Championship.

The Badminton Museum has recently had a Slazenger G.A.T. racket donated to the National Racket Collection. Slazenger first manufactured this racket in 1909 and continue to sell them for the next 25 years. The Slazenger G.A.T. racket donated to the Badminton Museum would have been purchased in c1934 and was one of the first Slazenger rackets to have a leather grip. 2022 Yonex All-England Badminton Championships


Just before the start of the 2022 Yonex All-England Badminton Championships the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced their decision because of the escalating conflict in Ukraine to exclude all players, coaches and technical officials from Russia and Belarus from sanctioned tournaments. As a direct result of this, seven Russian players who had entered the Yonex All-England were excluded and were replaced by other players on the reserve list.

			

				
				
				
				
				
			

				
				
				
				
				
Viktor Axelsen the Danish Olympic champion playing in his 4th consecutive Yonex All-England men’s singles final had a comparatively easy win in straight sets 21-10, 21-15 against the young 20-year-old Indian Lakshya Sen. This would be the second time Viktor had lifted the famous men’s singles trophy.

In the women’s singles final Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi who had reached the Yonex All-England final in 2018 and had little resistance reaching the 2022 final. Her opponent in the final was An Seyoung from Korea. It had been 26 years since Bang Soo Hyun had won a Yonex All-England woman’s singles title for Korea.


The 4th seed An Seyoung had not dropped a game reaching the final with a particularly good straight games win against the 1st seed Tai Tzu Ying from Chinese Taipei.


In the final 2nd seed Akane Yamaguchi’s speed and force of attack was too much for the Korean, An Seyoung struggled with her timing and control unable to reach any real consistency throughout the 44-minute final losing 21-15,21-15.

Louis who passed away in April 2020 at the age of 91 was involved in photographing badminton at all levels from the early 1970s to the 1990s. He was a favourite with the players and was invited by many of them to perform his photographic skills at their weddings. Louis produced many photo books of the top players and his pictures appeared in many leading badminton magazines and journals. Bill Andrew Chairman of the Badminton Museum said “The Museum has always been grateful to have a large collection of his photographs for future generations to enjoy. Louis’s legacy will make a huge difference to the Museum for many years to come”.


Louis Ross coached badminton at his local junior club and he received the English Badminton Award for services to badminton in 2008.
